Awareness

Self

Firstly, we have to recognize that we have the power to choose what we think about and what we allow to reside in our minds. That is, we have to think about what we are thinking about. There are things that are just not worth thinking about. Just because it is on the news does not make it worth our mental energy. There are also things that we simply do not need to think about, like reconsidering our fabric softener choice at every commercial break. Having the awareness to protect our mental energy requires us to take an assessment of our surroundings and consider whether or not they are essential. A big part of the process is simplifying our lives. If you frequently feel distracted, obsess on things, or have compulsive habits, then there are probably too many unnecessary energy withdrawals. It’s stealing energy from the rest of your life.

Here are some things to consider: Do I spend too much time on negative thoughts? If so, try the rubber band method to help “snap” yourself back into a better state. That is, anytime you are overanxious or dwelling on something negative, snap a rubber band on your wrist to remind yourself to change your thinking.
